Steve Hemelt Coauthors EdResearch for Action Brief

February 7, 2024

Results for America and the Annenberg Institute at Brown University released a new EdResearch for Action brief – Promoting Student Success in Early College Credit Coursesexpanding the conversation about early college credit courses from equal enrollment to equal success.

In the brief, Dylan Conger (George Washington University), Steven W. Hemelt (University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) and María Luisa Vásquez (George Washington University) review the research on:

  • The benefits of early college credit courses, for whom and under what circumstances.
  • Who has access to and participates in the courses.
  • Evidence-based strategies states and school districts can use to remove barriers to early college credit courses and actively prepare students for success.

The brief gives education leaders the information they need to help all students unlock the potential of early college credit classes.

Why it matters: College enrollment and completion rates have declined in recent years. Even as studies show that adults with education beyond high school are more likely to earn higher wages, have better job opportunities and health, and be more civically engaged. Early college credit courses increase a student’s likelihood of continuing their education and offer a low-cost way of getting college credit. Evidence-based strategies can help states and school districts increase access to these courses and help students succeed in them.
