Originally from rural Lebanon, KS, Kyle earned undergraduate degrees in political science from Kansas State University and economics from the University of Kansas, where he also completed a Master of public administration.

Prior to coming to UNC, Kyle served in a variety of capacities with federal and state legislatures. Most recently, Kyle was the chief of staff to Kansas House Appropriations Committee Chairman Troy Waymaster. During the 2017 legislative session, the legislature passed a new school funding formula, which gave Kyle the push to pursue a Ph.D. at UNC.

Kyle’s research interests include economics of education, school choice, and school finance. He employs microeconomic theory and quantitative research designs to answer research questions in these areas. His current projects focus on the North Carolina school funding mechanism and accountability in the charter school sector.
