Co-chairman of the National Commission on Fiscal Responsibility and Reform Erskine Bowles talks about the nation's financial future and outlines solutions in the 2011 Thomas W. Lambeth Lecture in Public Policy.

The Department of Public Policy, in combination with the UNC Center for Bioethics and Institute for Global Health & Infectious Diseases, will be hosting Sofia Gruskin on Monday, April 16 for a lecture on Global Health.

Maryann P. Feldman, S.K. Heninger Distinguished Professor of Public Policy, presented a keynote talk at the Geography of Innovation Seminar.   This seminar, held in Saint-Etienne, France, brought together the European scientific community working on the geography of innovation, as well as researchers, data producers, and public actors in innovation in order to discuss specific issues related to localized indicators of innovation and public policies.

This past March, two senior policy professors, Gary Henry and Maryann Feldman, published their work in the prestigious journal Science.  With one of our doctoral students (Kevin Bastian, who received a Carolina Impact Award in 2011-12) and former post-doctoral researchers, Professor Henry published his research measuring the performance of high school science and mathematics teachers in North Carolina.  Reviewing How Economics Shapes Science, Professor Feldman discusses the economics of scientific research, analyzing its implications for U.S. science policy.

Public Policy's MacRae Professor, Gary Henry, and a team of researchers from the Carolina Institute for Public Policy made a presentation to the UNC Board of Governors on Thursday, April 8th.  The presentation discussed the results from the study that shows that first year teachers are less productive than their experienced counterparts in nine of eleven areas. Their presentation has made a big splash across the state with vast amount of press coverage in The News & Observer, The Fayetteville Observer, and News 14 (with film clip).
