UNC Public Policy Professors Seek a Safer Way to Cook in Developing Countries
Smoke from burning fuels like wood and charcoal is the largest risk factor for disease and death in Rwanda, UNC Professors Handa and Jagger hope to change that with a $2.5 million grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences. Handa and Jagger teamed up with public policy aluma Megan Strickland to assess Inyenyeri's work to lease energy-efficient cook stoves at an affordable cost. PhD student Ipsita Das will also assist the team in Rwanda.

Dr. Ashu Handa is currently serving as the chief of social and economic policies for the UNICEF Office of Research-Innocenti. This office just produced the Innocenti Report Card 12, "Children of the Recession: The impact of the economic crisis on child well-being in rich countries." The report shows that since 2008, 2.6 million more children have fallen below the poverty line in the world's most affluent countries.
